Stand on the Soapbox or Keep My Mouth Shut?

So, I've been conflicted about whether or not to post about this and in the end I decided I had to. I was just too pissed off not to say something about it. In true Wolfie-style I'm about to go off on a rant....

Yesterday I was at school and eating lunch with some friend (two of whom I haven't known long), anyway I was telling them about this funny video that my brother sent me from YouTube... a music video with David Hasselhoff, it was called 'Get In My Car', or something to that effect. The conversation inevitably turned to amusing things we've seen on YouTube and one of the girls, who I'll call C, mentions how she likes to watch these, quote, "hilarious" videos a high school friend of hers does. She then goes on to tell of this one that she finds particularly funny where her friend is ranting about... well lets just say it was a homophobic/violent rant. I'm honestly a little sick to my stomach thinking about it.

After she announced this we were all silent for a minute until I spoke up and said that I didn't think this would be a funny video at all and I would be extremely insulted and disgusted if anyone ever suggested that I watch it. I know I was very abrupt with her but I wanted it known that, under no uncertain terms, would I ever find this remotely funny. Frankly, I was insulted and extremely shocked that she found it funny.

I'm one of those people who gets offended at stuff like this. I never tells racist jokes, I don't laugh at them, I don't read them and I sure as hell don't want to hear them. I thought that a girl who was more than halfway through her University career, and is supposed to be smart, would show more class than to suggest that we would find this amusing. I honestly don't know what the other girls there thought but V was clearly pissed since she didn't say another word after that. I couldn't keep my mouth shut and had to let my feelings be known.

It makes me wonder if she isn't the person I thought she was. Perhaps it was a poor judgement call on her part, but I'm not sure I want to stick around to find out.

unfortunately, in todays day and age, homophobes are probably the biggest jackasses next to racists.

The fact that my sister-inlaw, my neice, and my cousin are all gay, has taught me a lot about tolerance and acceptance. They are still the people I grew up with, watched grow, and lived with...nothing changes that. Sadly I have seen them go through the ignorance of others..some of it from family members...Great going Becky...Wolfies got your back.. ;)

Thanks Wolfie, I'm glad to hear that you're with me. It just really pissed me off and I wasn't sure if I was being overly sensative or sticking up for my beliefs.

MWAH!
